Amitabh Bhattacharya is a leading singer and lyricist in Bollywood.
Just like any other aspiring singer, Bhattacharya came to Mumbai eight years ago from his hometown Lucknow. However, instead of a job in singing, he began receiving work as a lyricist! Where others would have lost hope and probably not accepted such offers, Bhattacharya rose to the challenge. This multifaceted individual began his writing career with the film, 'Aamir' and then wrote 'Emosonal Atyachar' for Dev D, which went on to become the most popular song in the film.
Despite proving his mettle as a lyricist, Bhattacharya still nurtured a burning passion for singing. However, apart from a few radio jingles and some background singing, he received no relevant breaks. It was renowned Bollywood composer Amit Trivedi who helped Bhattacharya achieve his childhood dream and gain popularity as a singer.
A close friend of Bhattacharya, Trivedi had asked him to write a song for the film, 'Wake Up Sid'. However, ultimately it was Javed Akhtar who penned the lyrics, while Bhattacharya sang the sufiana-style song 'Iktara' along with female playback Kavita Seth.
Today, Bhattacharya is accepted as a lyricist as well as a singer and is able to shift gears between the two with ease. Although his fame as a lyricist overshadows his vocal prowess, Bhattacharya set the ball rolling with his rendition in 'Wake Up Sid'.
