Prashanth moved to the family court first, seeking re-union with his wife and restitution of conjugal rights. In return, Grihalakshmi lodged a dowry harassment complaint against Prashanth.

On June 11, 2007, Prashanth came to know that Grahalakshmi had married Narayan Venu Prasad in 1998 and that it was registered on December 31, 1998. Noting that suppression and non-disclosure of the information by Grahalakshmi and her family members amounted to fraud, Prashanth then sought divorce. Grahalakshmi, however, denied such a marriage and charged Prashanth and Venu Prasad of colluding with each other.
