Rati Agnihotri is a veteran Indian actress. Her portfolio mainly includes films in Hindi-Urdu, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. She starred in over 32 Telugu and Kannada films within a 3 year time period, working with big banners and top stars, such as Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth. Her entry into Hindi films came with `Ek Duje Ke Liye` (1981) alongside Kamal Haasan, the remake of their Telugu blockbuster, `Marocharithra` (1979). It became the top grossing hit of 1981, marking the debut of 5 South Indian stars into Hindi films - director K. Balachander, hero Kamal Hassan, heroine Rati Agnihotri, supporting actress Madhavi, and playback singer S.P. Balasubramaniam. Her biggest hits include `Farz Aur Kanoon` (1982), `Coolie` (1983) alongside megastar Amitabh Bachchan, `Tawaif` (film) (1985) for which she received her second Filmfare nomination as Best Actress and `Hukumat` (1987) with famous Bollywood icon, Dharmendra. She hails from a traditional, conservative Punjabi family, and grew up in Madras, Tamil Nadu. She was noticed while acting in her school play by a famous director, who cast her at the age of 16 in her very first film, ` Pudhiya Varpukal` (1979). The film was a hit making her an overnight sensation, and soon she starred in his next film, `Niram Marada Pookkal` (1979).
