Amar Prem is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious attempy during the 70's and it indeed is a masterpiece from Shakti Samanta. It narrates the story of innocent love between an Anand Babu (Rajesh Khanna) belonging to an aristocratic family and a courtesan (Sharmila Tagore). The movie contends that true emotional fulfillment need not necessarily lie in a fructified relationship which ends with a marriage and the average two kids; it can also be found in a nameless bond between a man and a woman that transcends convention.
The emotional appeal of the movie is undeniable with Shakti Samanta's direction treated with Aloke Dasgupta's cinematography. The film's climax is grasping with a series of events vindicating Pushpa's struggle, sorrows and sacrifices. Rajesh Khanna has portrayed another of his splendid performance as the struggling drunkard aristrocat. Sharmila Tagore as the emotionally drained courtesan is brilliant proving herself as an actor.
The musical treat with R D Burman's composition is flawless. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and S D burman.
With the enchanting performances by the cast and an amazing story line, Amar Prem is never-to-miss musical classic Bollywood movie.
