Big name, big banner, big stars is equal to a good movie, right? Wrong. This formula works only for a few movies where the movie cast is so big, that it envelopes the entire movie and the story doesn't even matter anymore. Sadly, that is not the case with Chatur Singh Two Star. It is a movie which claims its stars on its own, through its name...
Chatur Singh Two Star is a movie based on the novel 'Chaalak Jasoos'. It is about an extremely innocent, dumb Detective, Chatur Singh (Sanjay Dutt) and his sidekick Pappu Panther (Suresh Menon); it is about how stupidity gives rise to certain comical situations leading to unintentionally solving major cases, including the one we come across in the movie. Sonia (Ameesha Patel) is arrested as a suspect in the murder of the agriculture minister VV Singh (Gulshan Grover). Chatur Singh claims that she is innocent and sets her loose as a part of his plan to nab the real criminal. Many people cross the path of Chatur Singh, like, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Shakti Kapoor, etc... and add spice to the story in their own silly ways (which only they can understand). Will Chatur Singh ever get promoted in spite of his stupidity? Will he get any more stars above 2? Will he nab the criminals? Can he prove his Sonia-"not guilty"?
The movie is a flashy affair with all the elaborate clothes and colours, and of course the amusingly loud songs. There has been a fashion parade almost as if the movie is made so that there can be a fancy dress competition (who has dressed the worst). The movie claims to be a comedy but sadly doesn’t deliver what it promises. It has all the cliches in the world, the jokes are too forced and they are repetitive. Sanjay Dutt fails to recreate the Munnabhai magic (maybe he misses his buddy circuit). Suresh Menon doesn’t have much scope but whatever little he does have, he is good in it. Anupam Kher also has a very short role but that role is not very entertaining. Ameesha Patel looks stunning but nothing beyond that. Satish Kaushik who is the only person whose comedy doesn’t seem forced...he does it with ease.
Many comparisons are being drawn between the Pink Panther and Chatur Singh, but Pink Panther was a comedy at an entirely different level. All in all the movie is not the one you can die for... You can afford to give it a miss!
