Bhagyashree Enterprises & Entertainment Ltd.’s film, ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’, tells the story of Dr. Ambedkar, known mainly for his contributions in shaping the Constitution Of India, and his fight against the tyranny of the Hindu orthodoxy and political heroes, who were more interested in political gain than social reform. Released first released in 2000, the film was re-released in April, 2006 in nine languages.
Directed by Jabbar Patel, ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’ is a historical film – portraying an intelligent, straight and unbiased overview of the life, times and crucial turns in the life of Dr. Ambedkar. The film is well researched - in its settings, costumes, makeup and locations as well as in information.
A highlight of the film are its dialogues. The ideological confrontations between Gandhi and Ambedkar have been picturised superbly. The late Mohan Gokhale as ‘Gandhi’, and Mammootty as ‘Ambedkar’, have given stunning performance, with Mammootty delivering an award-winning performance. Sonali Kulkarni is convincing. Mrinal Kulkarni is passable. Govind Namdev and Anjan Srivastava give good performances.
Ashok Mehta’s cinematography is striking and Nitin Desai’s Art reflects quality. Music Director Amar Haldipur has given good music score, perfectly accentuating the canvas that Dr. Patel paints on-screen. Bhanu Athaiyya’s costumes are fabulous.
All in all, a must-see movie for all genres. Not many people today are aware of Dr. Ambedkar’s mission and his contribution to the nation. It’s about time that people learn the truth about our true heroes.
