Nice, but certainly not the 'Film Of The Year'

Love and Friendship are the two strong pillars of a Karan Johar film, and 'Student of the Year' (SOTY) is no different. This time the backdrop is of St Teresa School where students are competing with each other for a trophy, as the name suggests - The 'Student Of The Year' trophy.

Young and fresh is what we would describe the vibe of the film, and yes, it does match the regular standards of a KJo film. But from a director whose last release was 'My Name is Khan', expecting a film like this, is like asking Vidya Balan to do 'Heyy Babyy' again.

Nonetheless, the film is fun and super entertaining with Karan adding all the masala elements you would expect from him - A big fat wedding, actors participating in sports, a bimbo whose wooing the hottie, tie-ups with exclusive brands, super rich bunch of kids versus the not so fortunate ones, family values etc. etc. SOTY takes you through a roller coaster ride of emotions and succeeds. Though, it lacks novelty overall, a few sequences are commendable with some really cool dialogues.

Karan introduces two star kids Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan along with his assistant director Sidharth Malhotra with SOTY. There is no doubt that being their debut film, the trio has performed exceptionally well. However, Varun gets the brownie points for being a complete package.

Other students of the Karan Johar Institute include Boman Irani’s son Kayoze, Sana Saeed (SRK's daughter in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), Sahil Anand and Maansi Rachh, etc. who are aptly cast for their roles.

Rishi Kapoor plays the 'happy and gay' dean of the college, and we must say that playing such a character with this grace could not have been done better by any other actor. Ram Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Farida Jalal, Mannini De, Prachi Shah are veterans with no flaws. Cameos by Kajol, Farah Khan, Boman Irani and Vaibhai Merchant were pleasant.

Vishal-Shekhar have presented their best music with SOTY with one song better than the other. Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is superior with exotic locations, a Karan Johar trademark again. Background score too is aptly crafted.

All in all, SOTY will revive some of the best moments spent with your friends in your school/college days. So, if those days were the best days of your lives, or if you are still enjoying this phase, Student Of The Year is recommended.
